A LITTLE CONTEXT
The story
behind the place.
Port St. Lucie’s municipal story began later than many Florida coastal towns. The city says it was incorporated in 1961 by a development group that intended to sell quarter-acre lots to retirees. Early growth came without basic infrastructure such as sidewalks, streetlights, water and sewer, and the city describes the decades since as a period of building and adaptation. Its civic identity is closely tied to the North Fork of the St. Lucie River, which the city identifies as a state-designated aquatic preserve. The broader St. Lucie name has older roots: county historians trace “Santa Lucia” to a Spanish colony established between present-day Vero Beach and Stuart around 1567. Port St. Lucie itself, however, is a comparatively young city shaped by postwar development and continued expansion.
