GET TO KNOW TREASURE COAST

A place worth
making time for.

Florida’s Treasure Coast spans Indian River, St. Lucie and Martin counties along the southeastern Atlantic shore. From Vero Beach and Sebastian through Fort Pierce and Port St. Lucie to Stuart and Jensen Beach, the region pairs Atlantic beaches with the Indian River Lagoon, historic downtowns, wildlife habitats and locally rooted cultural stops. Hutchinson Island is a barrier island shared across the coastal landscape, not a municipality; its ocean-facing beaches and lagoon-side settings sit between the Atlantic and the Indian River Lagoon. Explore museums, conservation centers and waterfront dining at a relaxed regional pace, choosing stops by their actual city rather than treating the coast as one town. Beach conditions and access can change, so check official county updates before setting out.

A LITTLE CONTEXT

The story
behind the place.

The name Treasure Coast recalls the Spanish treasure fleet wrecked along Florida’s Atlantic coast in 1715. The ships carried wealth from Spain’s American possessions; a hurricane scattered cargo offshore, and the wrecks became part of the region’s maritime story. That history is only one layer of a coast shaped by waterways and settlement: the Indian River Lagoon borders communities from Sebastian and Vero Beach south through Fort Pierce toward Stuart, while barrier islands separate much of the lagoon from the Atlantic. Fort Pierce also has a distinct military history as the training ground of the original Navy combat divers, whose legacy is interpreted at the National Navy SEAL Museum. Today, museums and coastal conservation organizations help tell these stories alongside the region’s living landscapes.
