GET TO KNOW VERO BEACH

A place worth
making time for.

Vero Beach pairs Atlantic shoreline with a quieter, culture-rich Florida escape. The city sits in Indian River County, part of the Treasure Coast alongside St. Lucie and Martin counties. Visitors can move between oceanfront parks, gardens, art, and lagoon-side nature experiences, with downtown dining and galleries adding an easy-going evening scene. The Indian River Lagoon shapes much of the area’s character, while the barrier island’s beaches face the Atlantic. This guide focuses on Vero Beach, with a small number of regional picks clearly labeled in nearby Fort Pierce. Hutchinson Island is a geographic island, not a municipality; listings there should be identified by their actual city or community rather than presented as a town. For the midday itinerary, Salty’s Water Sports is identified at its Fort Pierce or Port St. Lucie location, not as a Vero Beach business.

A LITTLE CONTEXT

The story
behind the place.

Vero was settled by early pioneers in the 1880s. Henry T. Gifford established a citrus grove and a mercantile store that also served as a post office, express office, and railroad ticket office. The railway reached the settlement in 1893, strengthening transport and commerce. In 1912 the Indian River Farms Company began a large land-reclamation venture; the original Town of Vero plat followed in 1913. The City of Vero incorporated in 1919. After Indian River County was created in 1925, Vero became its county seat and was renamed Vero Beach. During World War II, the military established a naval air station northwest of town. In 1947, the Brooklyn Dodgers chose the former station as their spring-training home; the site is now associated with Vero Beach Municipal Airport and Historic Dodgertown.
