A LITTLE CONTEXT
The story
behind the place.
Stuart’s municipal history began with settlement in 1870. From 1893 to 1896, the community was called Potsdam, after early settler Otto Stypmann’s German hometown. The Stypmann brothers developed pineapple farms on land that now includes downtown. When the Florida East Coast Railway arrived, the community took the name Stuart, honoring early settler Homer Hine Stuart Jr. The city incorporated in 1914 and received its charter in 1925; today it serves as Martin County’s seat. That layered past remains visible in downtown’s historic buildings and local museums, while the St. Lucie River and nearby Indian River Lagoon continue to shape the area’s coastal identity. The city’s account notes Stuart lies along the river and just west of the lagoon.
